In December 2008 Chaplain Lawson was approached by Marilyn Penland, mother of a local soldier, John Penland (USAF) who along with his unit were stationed in Afghanistan. Ms Penland told Chaplain Lawson that her son and his unit were in need of personal items to make their deployment and Christmas a little easier. Chaplain Lawson coordinated with Ms Penland and a “We Care and Won't Forget” package was assembled and shipped off in time to make Christmas away from home more bearable for these young men.

About 50 children attended the event at Aviation Park in Kill Devil Hills which had candy and prizes along with “Ident-A-Kid” sponsored by the Kill Devil Hills Police Department and collected canned food donations for the Outer Banks Food Pantry.
